COLEACP General Meeting

4 June 2008 By decision of the COLEACP Board of Directors, during its meeting on March 10, 2008, the next COLEACP General Meeting will be held on June 4, 2008 in Paris. Members are invited right now to keep this day in their agenda. A buffet lunch and coffee breaks will be offered; travel and accomodation costs are born by the members. Those unable to attend may wish to delegate a proxy to another member.

Promotion of Madagascar litchis trade

From 7 May 2008 to 30 May 2008

Madagascar litchi exporters have decided to join forces in staging the promotion of their products. They will be signing a memorandum of understanding that is set to be a milestone for the export industry of litchis from Madagascar that will have an impact across the whole Malagasy territory.

The scheme is intended to guarantee the sustainability of the sector and to ensure a fair and decent income for producers.

Exporters are all committed to supplying quality products. All enterprises involved in this joint endeavour are required to corroborate they have been operating in the sector for a minimum of 3 years in order to guarantee a genuine professionalisation.

FRUIT LOGISTICA 2008

From 7 February 2008 to 9 February 2008

COLEACP organised about 170 B2B meetings between the members of its interprofessional network during the FRUIT LOGISTICA Fair held in Berlin (Germany) from 7 to 9 February 2008. First fresh produce industry trade event in Europe, attended by some 50,000 visitors, the Fruit Logistica Fair provided a major opportunity for strengthening trade links between ACP exporters and EU importers.
Following an intense preparation during several weeks in advance of the Fair, the COLEACP General Delegation in Rungis was able to gather and match information on the trade contacts sought by its ACP and EU members, and finally provide each member with an individual programme of business meetings, including contacts with service providers in the areas of cool chain management and banking. Although the quantified assessment of results is still underway, many members already reported back their satisfaction.
Through many discussions they also held in Berlin, the two representatives of the COLEACP General Delegation : Catherine Guichard and Denis Felicite-Zulma, gathered information from our EU importer members on their priority issues, the two first ones being, on the one hand, quality management and the challenges they must face for demonstrating compliance to the retailers’ requirements on MRLs and uses of active substances imposed on the suppliers, that go well beyond the EU legal ones (a major concern for German importers), and on the other hand, the identification of suppliers either fair trade certified or able to ship fruits and vegetables by sea as a substitute to air transportation (a major concern for UK importers).
6 ACP countries exhibited in Berlin among 68 other origins from all over the world. Madagascar was present for the 1st time (with a noticeable film presenting how quality is managed throughout the lychee industry), as were again Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Uganda and South Africa.
Being a very professional Fair and a unique venue where to make business contacts and discover new technologies, attending the Fruit Logistica Fair requires extensive preparation well ahead of the event. COLEACP members will be invited to make again best use of our « matchmaking » services during the next event planned from February 4 to 6, 2009.
